Arraignment Held For Fort Washington Man Charged In Connection To September 2023 Murder In DC

Four men charged in connection to a mass shooting that left one dead and five others injured inside a Southwest DC apartment more than a year ago, federal authorities announced.

Shortly after 4:15 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 5, 2023, Assistant Metropolitan Police Chief Carlos Heraud said that officers rushed to the 200 block of M Street SW when they heard gunshots ring out.

Upon arrival, two men were found suffering from gunshot wounds, one of whom - later identified as Matthew Miller, 32 - was pronounced dead at the scene and another who suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

While still investigating the fatality, Heraud said that three others arrived at local hospitals suffering from injuries also believed to be tied to the M Street SW shooting. 

A sixth suffered undisclosed injuries after falling from the building.

On Friday, federal officials announced that arraignment was held for 30-year-old Deandre Christian, of Fort Washington, as well as Keyshawn Lavender, 23, Deandre Sams, 28, Raymond Mathis, 37, all from DC.

Lavender, Sams, and Mathis were charged with conspiracy to commit robbery, first degree felony murder while armed, and related charges for the shooting. Christian was arraigned on an assault with intent to kill charge for shooting from the balcony of an apartment building.

Each has pleaded not guilty.

Lavender, Sams, and Mathis are scheduled for trial on Sept. 8, 2025; a trial date for Christian has not yet been set.
